Bicyclists have to obey traffic laws just like other vehicles and pedestrians, yet often are expected to ride dangerously close to parked cars and curbs. Does Beacon have any plans to make bicycle travel safer on city streets?

Beacon's-own Stowe Boyd has started a Sharrows initiative alongside some other Beacon biking advocates. You can sign up to find out more at his mailing list.

Beacon doesn't have sharrows yet, but discussions are certainly underway. The issue of who pays for the markings and maintains them seeing that the marking of Main Street is not done by the City (NYS contract) is being discussed.

Under NYS law, bikes have the right to travel in the middle of the road with traffic if there is a danger of injury due to parked cars, which on a city street there is. Many don't know that. I can't cite the specific law.
